NBS Director of Population, Census and Social Statistic, Mr Ephraim Kwesigabo, told journalists in Dar es Salaam that inflation rate for food and nonalcoholic beverages in June shot to 8.1 per cent from 7.0 per cent in May, a factor analysts attributed to increased demand for the items during the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home has increased to 8.3 per cent in June 2016 from 7.2 per cent recorded in May, 2016,” explained Mr Kwesigabo and added: “In addition, the 12 month index change for non-food products has slightly decreased to 3.6 per cent in June 2016 from 3.8 per cent recorded in May, 2016,” indicating the need to spend more on food left with little money for other expenditure.
Headline Inflation Rate measures the inflation rate when all items in the fixed Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket are included. Thus, prices increased only by a modest 0.3 per cent between May and June, this year, basing on price increases for the year ended May 2016.
